Pişi Mutfak Moda

Gastronomy · Moda, Kadıköy

A breakfast and brunch spot on a quiet street in Moda, named after its warm fried dough, pişi. No reservations; the street tables fill up on weekend mornings.

A plate of warm pişi lands on the table with cheeses, olives and milk jam. Pişi Mutfak, on Ağabey Street in Moda, is a breakfast spot built, as the name says, around pişi. Its own tagline calls breakfast in Moda a culture, and it has been part of that neighbourhood ritual for years.

What to order

On a first visit, start with the pişi plate. Pişi is a yeasted dough fried until crisp outside and soft inside. The plate comes with the house pişi, several cheeses, acuka (a spicy pepper and walnut spread), olives, milk jam and rocket.

For a single plate, there are breakfast plates with scrambled eggs and a choice of sucuk (spiced beef sausage) or frankfurters. The pişiviç is worth a look: a sandwich of griddled bread with scrambled eggs, sucuk and pickles. Menemen (eggs scrambled with tomato and pepper), omelettes and fried eggs are also on the menu. The shop sells cheeses and charcuterie to take away, too.

Visiting tips

Pişi Mutfak does not take reservations. The street tables fill fast on weekend mornings, so arrive early or go on a weekday. Lunch is served as well, which suits late risers.

Walk from Kadıköy ferry pier or take the nostalgic tram to Moda. The Moda seafront and tea gardens are a few minutes away, good for a walk after breakfast.

Check the café's accounts for current opening hours.
