Monastery of St George (Aya Yorgi), Büyükada

Culture · Büyükada, Adalar

4.5Editorial Rating

A Greek Orthodox monastery on Yücetepe, Büyükada's highest hill at 202 metres. Known for its wishing tradition: a silent climb and threads tied to the trees.

On Büyükada, the largest of the Princes' Islands off Istanbul, a steep path climbs from Luna Park Square past trees hung with coloured threads. At the top stands the Monastery of St George (Aya Yorgi Kilisesi ve Manastırı), on Yücetepe, the island's highest hill at 202 metres. From here the Sea of Marmara, the other islands and the Istanbul shore lie spread out below.

History

The monastery's roots go back to Byzantine times. Tradition links its founding to 963, under Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas. There is no firm record, but the site is thought to have been sacred since the 10th century.

Its Greek name is Hagios Georgios Koudounas, "St George of the Bells". The story goes that in the 1600s a shepherd followed the sound of bells from under the ground and found an icon of St George. It is said the icon had been buried to protect it during the Crusader sack of 1204.

The buildings date from different periods. The present church was rebuilt in the early 20th century, after the 1894 earthquake damaged the older one. Small chapels and a holy spring (ayazma) sit around the courtyard.

The wishing tradition

People of every faith come to Aya Yorgi. The busiest days are 23 April, St George's Day, and 24 September. Visitors climb the hill while making a wish. Custom says you should not speak or look back on the way. People tie threads and strips of cloth to the trees, drink from the holy spring and light candles. There is also a simple country restaurant next to the monastery.

Visiting

Ferries and sea buses run to Büyükada from Eminönü, Kabataş, Kadıköy and Bostancı. From the pier, walk or take the island's electric vehicles to Luna Park Square. From there it is a steep climb of about one kilometre. Wear good shoes and bring water. Dress modestly and keep quiet inside the church. Opening times and services can change, so check before you go.

Tip: the path is packed around 23 April. For a quiet visit, go on a weekday morning.
