Designed by Alexandre Vallaury, the building is a landmark temple of finance with its double façade — Neoclassical toward Bankalar Avenue, Orientalist toward the Golden Horn. Scene of the historic bank raid of 1896, it is today a living cultural centre open to all, with thick armoured steel vaults in its basement, a large research library and exhibition halls.
