Galata Tower: Tickets, Opening Hours and How to Get There
Galata Tower rises from the top of the Galata hill in Beyoğlu, looking down on the point where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus. You will see it from almost every corner of the old Genoese quarter. Here is what you need before you go: tickets, opening hours, Museum Pass rules, directions and the story behind the stones.
How to get to Galata Tower
Whichever way you come, the last stretch is on foot, often uphill.
- By metro (M2): Get off at Şişhane on the Yenikapı–Hacıosman line. Take the Tünel/Galata exit and follow Galip Dede Caddesi downhill. About 5–7 minutes. This is the easiest route.
- By tram + funicular: Take the T1 tram to Karaköy. Walk up Yüksek Kaldırım (10–12 minutes, steep), or ride the historic Tünel funicular from Karaköy up to Beyoğlu, then walk 5 minutes down Galip Dede Caddesi.
- On foot from Sultanahmet or Eminönü: Cross Galata Bridge past the fishermen and climb up from Karaköy. About 20–25 minutes from Eminönü.
- On foot from Taksim: Walk the length of İstiklal Avenue to Tünel Square, then down Galip Dede Caddesi. About 25–30 minutes.
- From the airports: From Istanbul Airport, take the M11 metro to Gayrettepe and change to the M2 for Şişhane (75–90 minutes), or a Havaist bus to Taksim. From Sabiha Gökçen, take the Havabüs to Taksim (1.5–2 hours with traffic).
Galata Tower opening hours
According to the tower's official website, Galata Tower is open every day from 08:30 to 23:00, with last entry at 22:00. There is no weekly closing day and the official pages list no separate summer and winter hours.
If you hold a pass, note that the official museum portal splits the day into a daytime session (08:30–18:30) and a "night museum" session from 18:30; passes only work in the daytime. Hours can change on public holidays, so double-check on galatakulesi.gov.tr or by phone (+90 212 249 03 44).
Galata Tower tickets and prices
| Visitor | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|

Where to buy: At the ticket office, or online through the official portal muze.gov.tr.
Queues: Entry is capped per hour (100 people per hour at the 2024 reopening), so lines build on weekend afternoons and at sunset. An online ticket does not skip security or the elevator queue.
Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. The official pages do not publish a student rate for international visitors; ask at the desk.
Is Galata Tower included in Museum Pass Istanbul?
Yes. Museum Pass Istanbul is the government's tourist pass. The official page lists it at €105, valid for 5 days from your first museum entry, with one entry per museum. Galata Tower is on the list, alongside Topkapı Palace and the Istanbul Archaeology Museums.
The catch: with the pass you must enter Galata Tower by 18:14. It does not work for evening or night visits. If you want the tower at sunset, buy a separate €30 ticket.
Museum Pass Türkiye is the nationwide version; check muze.gov.tr for the current price and list.
Müzekart is the annual card for Turkish citizens, Blue Card holders and citizens of Northern Cyprus; it is not sold to tourists. Foreign students at Turkish universities can get a discounted card. Other residence-permit holders should check muze.gov.tr.
Can you visit Galata Tower at night?
Yes, and it is one of the latest-opening museums in Istanbul. Doors close at 23:00 and the last entry is at 22:00. A €30 ticket covers evening hours.
At night the city changes. The bridges over the Golden Horn light up, Süleymaniye's domes glow on the opposite hill, and ferries trace lines across the Bosphorus. For sunset, join the queue 45–60 minutes before the sun goes down.
What's inside and when to go
The tower has 11 levels, counting the basement, ground floor and mezzanine. A two-cabin elevator runs from the ground floor to the 6th floor; stairs take you to the viewing level on the 8th. The lower floors hold an exhibition on Istanbul's history and the tower itself, and an audio guide is available.
There is no restaurant. The old cafeteria was removed during the 2020 restoration, so plan food and coffee in the streets below.
Best time: Weekday mornings at 08:30 are the calmest. Sunset and after dark give the best views. The viewing balcony is narrow, about a metre wide, so take your time.
Photo spots: Büyükhendek Caddesi, the end of Serdar-ı Ekrem Sokağı and, for the full skyline, the Eminönü end of Galata Bridge.
The story: from Genoese tower to Hezarfen's flight
In 1348, the Genoese colony of Pera was growing on the north shore of the Golden Horn. At its highest point they built a tower and topped it with a cross. They called it Christea Turris, the Tower of Christ. Every ship entering the harbour saw it.
After 1453 it passed to the Ottomans. Records show it was rebuilt after the 1509 earthquake, used as a prison, then as a fire lookout over a city of wooden houses. Fires in 1794 and 1831 reshaped it; a storm in 1875 blew off its roof.
Then there is the legend. The 17th-century traveller Evliya Çelebi tells how Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi strapped on wings, leapt from the tower and glided across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar. No other record of the flight exists. Only Evliya's words.
A 1960s restoration gave the tower its current silhouette. In 2020 the later concrete additions came out, and on 6 October 2020 it opened as a museum. Swifts now nest in its walls. What else has it seen that no one wrote down?
