Free Museums in Istanbul (and Other Free Things to Do)

Istanbul's big-ticket sights have become expensive for foreign visitors. The good news: some of the city's most rewarding spaces still cost nothing. Here are the museums that are free every day, the ones with free hours, and the mosques, parks and walks that make a great zero-lira day. All checked in October 2026.

Museums that are always free

SALT Galata sits in a grand 19th-century bank building on Bankalar Caddesi in Karaköy. Expect exhibitions, an archive and a calm library reading room. Open Tuesday to Saturday 11:00–19:00 and Sunday 11:00–18:00. Its sister venue, SALT Beyoğlu, is on İstiklal Avenue with the same hours.

Türkiye İş Bankası Museum is in Eminönü, a short walk from the Spice Bazaar. Its exhibitions trace a century of the bank's history. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00.

City-run museums. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality runs around 41 museums and exhibition spaces, and in September 2026 it said most of them are free. Check at the door, as some charge a small fee.

Pera Museum's long Friday evening is the best free deal in Beyoğlu. You can see Osman Hamdi Bey's The Tortoise Trainer without paying.

Sakıp Sabancı Museum is in Emirgan, in a mansion on the Bosphorus. Combine a free Tuesday with a walk in Emirgan Park.

Dolmabahçe Palace opens free to all visitors on 10 November, the anniversary of Atatürk's death in the palace. Expect a long, respectful queue.

Children under 12 enter Istanbul Modern, Pera Museum and Sakıp Sabancı Museum for free on any day.

Free mosques

Mosques are free to enter outside prayer times. Women cover their hair; everyone covers shoulders and knees. Scarves are often available at the door.

  • Süleymaniye Mosque, Sinan's masterpiece, with a terrace view over the Golden Horn
  • Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii)
  • Rüstem Paşa Mosque, hidden above the market streets of Eminönü, famous for its İznik tiles
  • Ortaköy Mosque, right on the water under the Bosphorus Bridge

Note that Hagia Sophia and Kariye (Chora) are mosques, but foreign visitors follow a separate paid tourist route.

Free parks and walks

  • Gülhane Park, the old outer garden of Topkapı Palace
  • Emirgan Park, famous for April tulips
  • Galata Bridge to Karaköy, then up past the Kamondo Stairs to Galata Tower
  • Bebek to Arnavutköy along the Bosphorus shore
  • Moda seafront in Kadıköy at sunset

For the price of a ferry token, the Kadıköy–Eminönü ferry is the cheapest Bosphorus view in town. See our Bosphorus cruise guide.
