Museum Pass Istanbul vs Müzekart: Which Card Do You Need?
Two museum cards, one city, a lot of confusion. Here is the short answer: if you are visiting Istanbul as a tourist, you need Museum Pass Istanbul, not Müzekart. Müzekart is a yearly card for Turkish citizens and a few resident groups. The rest of this guide explains why, and when neither card is worth it.
Who can buy which card?
Museum Pass Istanbul is the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's card for visitors. Anyone can buy it. It costs €105 and runs for five days, starting from your first museum entry, not from the purchase date. It covers 13 Ministry museums and sites in Istanbul, including Topkapı Palace, Galata Tower and the Istanbul Archaeological Museums.
Müzekart costs 200 TL a year and opens 350+ Ministry museums across the country, plus the National Palaces. But it is sold only to:
- Turkish citizens
- Blue Card holders
- Citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
- Foreign students enrolled in Türkiye (discounted card)
If you live in Istanbul on another type of residence permit, check eligibility at a ticket desk before you plan around it.
What each card covers in Istanbul
| Place | Museum Pass Istanbul | Müzekart |
|---|---|---|
| Topkapı Palace (main sections) | Yes | Yes |
| Topkapı Harem and Hagia Irene | No, separate ticket | No, separate ticket |
| Galata Tower | Yes, last entry 18:14 | Yes, +200 TL after 18:30 |
| Istanbul Archaeological Museums | Yes | Yes |
| Dolmabahçe Palace | Check at the desk | Yes, except the Selamlık |
| Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum | No | No |
| Basilica Cistern | Not listed; check on site | Integration announced, check on site |
| Private museums (Pera, Istanbul Modern) | No | No |
The Galata Tower detail matters. With Museum Pass you must enter by 18:14. The evening slot, when the city lights up, is not included.
Is Museum Pass Istanbul worth it?
Do the maths with your own plan. According to January 2026 reports, a single foreign-visitor ticket costs €55 for Topkapı Palace and €30 for Galata Tower. Those two alone come to €85. Add the Archaeological Museums or the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum and the pass pays for itself.
The pass is not worth it if:
- You only want Topkapı and Galata Tower.
- You plan to spend most of your time in Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar. Mosques are free to enter (Hagia Sophia's tourist route has its own ticket), and the bazaar has no gate.
- You want Galata Tower at sunset in winter or after dark.
Things neither card covers
- Topkapı's Harem, which many visitors call the best part. Budget for a separate ticket.
- Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum in Sultanahmet Square. €25; the official page states that Müzekart is not valid.
- Kariye (Chora) Mosque. Run by the General Directorate of Foundations. Foreign visitors paid €20 when tickets were introduced in August 2024.
- Private museums such as Pera Museum, Istanbul Modern and the Sakıp Sabancı Museum. Several have free hours, which we list in our free museums guide.
How to buy
Museum Pass Istanbul is sold at museum ticket desks and through the official Museums of Türkiye app (App Store and Google Play), where you get a digital card with a QR code. Buy only from muze.gov.tr or the official app.
